You can’t go home again, but if you do, pretend you want to be there.

Dr. Madison Shay has left Chicago and moved back to her small town roots to take over her father’s medical practice. She’s not the skinny, gawky red haired, four-eyed girl any longer but it sure feels that way. She still remembers the painful teasing from her classmates and always feeling like she didn’t belong. She wants this time to be different but deep down she knows she’ll never be part of the cool crowd.

Sheriff Tanner Marks might have been the captain of the football team years ago but things aren’t as rosy now. He has a son who hates him, and an ex-wife who is about to marry a man Tanner thinks might be a criminal. He doesn’t really have time in his life for a woman. Considering the things he’s done in his past, he’s not sure he deserves one either. He can’t help but feel envious of his friend, Seth Reilly, though. He found the love of a good woman. Is it too much to ask that fate send him someone as well?

Madison and Tanner aren’t looking for love but it feels like the town has other plans. They keep finding themselves thrown together and it’s not unpleasant in the least. In fact, they’re starting to enjoy themselves. There just might be a future for them after all.

When a drug war between two cartels breaks out, their little town is caught in the crossfire. Tanner will call in every favor he can, from the five cowboy cops he trusts most in the world, to keep his town and the woman he loves safe. He’s going to show the bad guys what cowboy justice really means.

Publisher’s warning: This book contains hot sex scenes between a sexy small town sheriff and his very lucky woman, including action in the shower, on the kitchen table, and in front of a roaring fire.

"So what was the emergency this afternoon?" she asked, grabbing at any topic she could.

Tanner leaned back in the booth.  "Murder.  Some guy got hacked up in his kitchen."  He scraped his hand over his face.  "Shit.  I'm sorry.  Sometimes I forget how to talk in polite company.  Please accept my apologies."

Tanner's cheeks were a dull red.  She felt better knowing she wasn't the only one uncomfortable.  "Relax.  I'm a doctor.  We can talk about all sorts of gross topics and I'll be able to eat dinner.  I have a cast iron stomach."
"Still, I should be careful.  Not too many people like to discuss death and dismemberment over their supper."  Tanner shook his head, still looking discomfited.

"I think what you do is very interesting, actually.  Do you know why he was murdered?  Do we get a lot of murders in Springwood?"

"Not until recently," he answered, thanking the waitress when she brought their drinks.  "Our humble town appears to be on a drug route to Canada and the cartels are fighting over it.  Hence the recent rise in drug related crime and also in dead bodies.  Today was the third."

"And they cut him up?  Most of the gang activity I saw in Chicago involved guns.  You wouldn't believe what a semi-automatic weapon can do to the human body."

"I would, actually.  I was in the military."

She hadn't known that.  "Did you see action?"

He nodded.  "The first Gulf War.  I left the Army in 1996."

"I'm not a big fan of war.  Most doctors aren't."

"I'm not either.  There weren't many casualties in that war but I did see my fair share.  Not a pretty sight.  You must have seen some ugly things in Chicago."

"I worked in an emergency room at a city hospital.  On the weekends it was like a war zone.  Endless streams of bodies.  Kids too young to be carrying a gun, let alone know how to use it.  Innocent people caught in the crossfire."

The conversation was easy and comfortable.  She and Tanner had something in common.  She told him stories from the ER and he told her stories about being in the Middle East.  By the time they'd eaten their way through more than half of the pizza, she'd realized she was having fun.

Tanner was a nice man.  Because he was, he deserved to know what Sherry and the town were trying to do.  It was only fair to warn him.

"Tanner," she began, not sure how to say what needed to be said.  "Sherry is...well, trying to be a good friend.  She's trying...” Madison couldn't find the words.

He scratched his chin.  "Sherry's a sweet girl.  Dan should marry her."

"He should."  Madison nodded, starting to lose her courage.  She wasn't brave about men at the best of times.  "Sherry doesn't like that I'm alone."  Madison tried again.

Tanner sighed.  "A young woman such as yourself shouldn't be alone.  It can be hard to be on your own."

"Sherry doesn't think you should be alone either.  Neither does the town."

Tanner narrowed his eyes.  "The town has an opinion about my life?  Why am I not surprised?  They have an opinion about everything."

Madison shredded her napkin.   "She thinks we shouldn't be alone.  Together."  She said the words quickly and braced herself for his laughter.  It was surely a joke to him that anyone would think he was even slightly interested in her.

He frowned.  "Together?  As in you and me?"

She nodded.  "Yes.  Sherry and the town are conspiring to throw us together.  Haven't you thought it was strange that we keep running into each other?  That there were no tables at the coffee shop?  That Sherry suddenly got an important phone call and left us here together?  They're plotting against us, Tanner."

Her voice had gone up an octave and Tanner seemed to recognize her distress.  He held his hand up.  "Calm down.  I have seen quite a bit of you, but are you sure?  The entire town couldn't organize a trip to the bathroom."

"Sherry can.  She can orchestrate the perfect day for a bride without a hitch.  Now she's organizing you and me.  Sally wouldn't check out my books tonight until you were around.  I wasn't going to be allowed to leave the library without seeing you."

Whatever reaction she had expected, the one she got wasn't it.  Tanner laughed. He was still chuckling when the waitress brought the check.  "The town honestly believes a beautiful young woman like you would want to be with a broken down old lawman like me?  Holy hell, I'm at least ten or fifteen years older than you, divorced with two kids, one of which hates my guts.  You could do a hell of a lot better than me."

He needed to take this seriously.  "You're not broken down and old.  You're a nice man, which is why I told you.  Forewarned is forearmed."

His blue eyes twinkled.  "Forewarned?  Are they going to force us to fall in love and get married?  We're adults, Maddie.  I think we can handle them."

She hadn't been called Maddie since she was a kid.  "You think this is something to take lightly?  We're here together, aren't we?  They can engineer anything they want if we don't pay attention."

Tanner rubbed the back of his neck.  "You have a point.  Although having dinner with a pretty lady isn't something I would normally fight.  It's you I feel sorry for."

Madison slapped the shredded napkin down on the table.  "Stop.  You're not old and I am not to be pitied because I'm having dinner with you.  The fact is this was quite pleasant."

Well, crap, she hadn't meant to say that out loud.

Happy New Year!

I hope everyone is ready for a brand new start.  I love this time of year.  Everything seems fresh and possible.

It’s going to be a busy year as well.  I have several projects simmering and most of them have to do with hunky cowboys!  Yep, I’m planning at least three more Cowboy Justice books for 2014.  Maybe four if I can squeeze it in.  I’m working on Logan’s book now, and Griffin is next.

I also have some short stories planned for something a little different.  These will have a BDSM vibe and be a little hotter than the Cowboy Justice series.  I have a few ideas including the continuation of the Key Party Chronicles, and also a fun little time travel series.  Stay tuned for updates!

As for my resolutions?  Read more, write more, and exercise more.  Oh, and maybe eat more chocolate.

Have a terrific 2014!

Behind the Scenes

Ø Is there a message in your novel that you hope readers walk away with?

Love is possible, but it takes work and compromise.

Ø What are your current projects?

I’m currently working on the 3rd book in the Cowboy Justice series, and also a short story with a time travel twist.

Ø Do you see writing as a career?

Yes!  This is how I make my living and I feel so lucky to be able to do this!

Ø Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?
I was always an avid reader, even as a child.  I remember thinking that making up stories would be a cool way to make a living.  I was right!

Ø Give us an insight into your main character. What does he/she do that is so special?

Ah Tanner Marks!  Tanner is special because he’s been through hell and come out the other side.  He’s fought his many demons and wrestled them to the ground, but life keeps testing him.  Like all good heroes, he struggles but ultimately finds the strength to win.  He’s also pretty sexy.

Ø Which actor/actress would you like to see playing the lead character from your most recent book?

Jon Hamm.  He does such a great job playing tortured characters, I think he’d be perfect for Tanner.

Ø How much research do you do?

Quite a bit!  Sometimes I worry the government is going to see my Google searches and put me on a list somewhere.  Seriously, I research things from the mundane such as mileage between two cities, and the exciting, such as what weapons will blow the doors on an armored vehicle.

Ø What was the hardest thing about writing your latest book?

The hardest thing about writing Justice Healed was making sure I hit the right emotional tone.  Tanner and Madison weren’t looking for love but suddenly there it was.  I wanted the reader to feel their initial hesitation and then their joy at realizing what they’d found.

Flash Round

How do you feel about being the center of attention?
I hate it.  I just hate it.  I didn’t even like opening presents at my baby shower because people were looking at me.

What makes you blush?
Too many things!  I blush very easily for a writer of smut.

How do you feel, generally, about the opposite sex?
I adore men.  I love that they look at life in such a straightforward manner.

What is your worst habit?
Eating chocolate while I write.

Do you have any irrational fears or phobias?
Um, yes.  Clowns, snakes, heights to name a few.

What are you the most hopeless at?
Sports.  I can barely walk and chew gum at the same time.
