Shirley’s Story
Intergalactic Matchmaking Series 2

Excerpt

This is Chapter 1 of “Shirley’s Story.”

“Women Wanted: Must have a sense of adventure and be open to new experiences. Must also be willing to relocate. Please contact Claire O’Donnell at Intergalactic Matchmaking Services, (360) 555-4416, for more information.”

Monday, December 9

Home Sweet Home, thought Shirley. It was good to be home after a day of teaching first-graders. She pulled into the driveway of the only home she had ever known. Taking a deep breath of the cool air blowing in off the Skagit River, heavy with the scent of salt from the Puget Sound, she felt her insides start to unwind. The old clapboard house was inherited from her parents on their death several years ago. A member of the Hampton family had lived in this house on Dunbar Road since the early 1900’s. Shirley was the last of the Hamptons in this area.

Before heading inside, she walked down the long driveway to the mailbox at the curb. With the mail in hand Shirley headed to the house. She could hear Oreo barking excitedly from inside the house. It was nice to have someone to come home to, but she would have liked it even more if there was a partner to come home to. Someone to share news with about the kids she taught. Someone to snuggle on the couch with. Oreo, the black and white Whippet she received as a gift three years ago, did her best to fill the void in Shirley’s life. It was easy to trust a dog; not so easy to trust men. Not after what she had endured.

“Hey, girl, how’re you doing, hmm?” she asked the bouncing dog. She bent down to pet her behind her ears; Oreo loved having her ears scratched. Her whole head was black except for the thin strip of white down the center from her forehead to her nose. Little Hannah Ford had named the dog Oreo.
Shirley put away her coat and purse. Gathering the mail to take with her to the back of the house, she turned to the adorable black and white dog.

“Let’s get you in the back yard, Oreo,” she said to the dog as she walked to the sliding glass door leading into the large yard from the dining room.
[…]

Shirley picked up the mail she had dropped onto the kitchen table. Junk, junk, junk, a postcard, and a business envelope. […]

[…] She picked up the last envelope. A sense of dread crawled up her spine; sweat broke out on her brow and her palms became clammy. The return address on the envelope was the Washington Department of Corrections. She could think of only one reason they would contact her. They must be planning to release him.

Dear Miss Hampton,

This letter is to notify you that Mr. Bruce Mayfield has served his sentence in full and is being released on parole December 9, 2013. He has been advised to stay away from you, but there is no longer a Restraining Order or Order of Protection in place. If you have any concerns, please contact your local law enforcement office.

Shirley was breathing hard by the time she got to the end of the letter. What do they mean if she has concerns? Of course she would be concerned! The maniac had tried to kill her and had almost succeeded. Her legs folded then, no longer able to hold her up. Oh, god, please don’t let him come back to Mount Vernon, she prayed silently.

Shirley’s hand went to her abdomen. She could feel the hard line of the scars on her stomach; scars left on her by Bruce five years ago. He didn’t take it well when she ended their short, yet tumultuous relationship. He had been her first serious relationship, her first in so many things. After the death of her parents she had been so alone, so vulnerable. And Bruce had come into her life just when she needed someone to lean on. She thought he was her Mr. Right. Little did she know at the time he would turn out to be more Mr. Hyde. After she broke things off with him, Bruce had stalked her at all hours, coming to the school where she worked, parking outside her house, intimidating her by seeming to be everywhere she went.

One night he broke into her house, drunk and screaming that she had no right to dump him, that she was his. He had been served that day with a Restraining Order and Order of Protection. It set off his hair-trigger temper. […] The police arrived in time to catch Bruce, but not in time to keep him from hurting her. He had attacked Shirley with a large serrated hunting knife that he carried in his boot. He had stabbed her three times in the abdomen and once in the back.

She had spent over a week in the hospital. The effect of that attack would be with her the rest of her life, though. Just the thought of the damage he had done to her angered her. The anger helped to burn away the fear. She was scarred, but the worst part of all was that her whole future would be affected by him. She would never be able to put the incident behind her completely.

When he had stabbed her in the lower abdomen, he had hit one of her ovaries and the doctors had to remove it. She wanted kids someday, but her chances were now cut in half thanks to Bruce. Of course, it wasn’t like she was in the running for motherhood as it was. Trusting men did not come easy these days; it had been a long time since she had gone out on a date.
[…] Counting on Bruce to do the smart thing, and stay away from her, wasn’t something she would do. The smartest thing about Bruce were his wisdom teeth. The guy had drank too deeply from the well of ignorance.

Behind the Scenes

Thinking back on your first book, is there anything you would have done differently?

I wouldn’t have ended it as soon. It being my debut book, I think I got caught up in the excitement of nearing the end of the book and lost my pacing on it. It still makes sense, and I didn’t leave anything hanging that I didn’t intend to, but I think I would have drawn it out more.

Has your perspective on the writing process changed since you became published?

Yes, definitely. I do my best to read up on the writing craft and have been trying to apply it the best I can on each subsequent writing.

Do you work best on a deadline, or do you need freedom from time constraints?

No deadline please! Then it feels too much like work. Deadlines seem to block my thinking when it comes to writing.

How do you know you’ve written a good book?

Hard question! Most writer blogs say to write what you would enjoy reading yourself. So I use that approach, and when I am done with the story, I hope the readers will find the story as engaging as I did while writing the story.

How do you keep your characters and stories organized?

I use a character sheet I found and modified; one for each character. It’s a collection of questions about their looks, mannerisms, strengths, weaknesses, etc.

Are you a Swooper (write first, edit later,) a Basher (edit each sentence as you go,) or both?

Both. If I want to be working on the story, but am stuck on what should come next, I will sit down and read what I have so far, then tweak it if needed.

What is the one thing you must have to be able to write?

Irish Breakfast Tea. My caffeine addiction of choice.

What are you currently working on? How is it different from other books you’ve written?

I’m working on Story 3 in the series. It’s different because I am trying to handle the romance connections of two couples in this book instead of just one. It’s definitely challenging me!

Is there anything you haven’t written that you would like to try some day? Why have you avoided it in the past?

I would like to write mystery, but I am not sure I have the skills for it. When I either finish the Intergalactic Matchmaking Series I may try my hand at it. I haven’t decided.

Do you have any rituals, habits, or superstitions about your writing?

No.

What types of scenes are your favorite to write?

Scenes including animals. I like trying to imagine how our human interactions would appear to someone from another world. What would they find shocking or hilarious about the way we live with pets.

Do you prefer to write 1st or 3rd Person POV? Why?

3rd Person. When I try to write in 1st Person, I forget to keep observations in that view, which leads to a lot of “fixing” later.

What do you feel are the most important aspects to a good romance?

A basis of friendship. I think the best romances, in real life, have a solid basis in friendships

Are you always in the driver’s seat? Or do your characters drag you along for the ride?

The characters have dragged me along once or twice. In Book 2 of the series, I had in mind an existing character from Book 1 to be the Romantic Lead for Shirley. When it came time to start writing, I realized he wouldn’t work in that role. I had to create a new character, which I think turned out much better.

Inside the Book

Describe your setting and why you chose to write about this place.

I chose Mount Vernon, Washington, because I used to live on an island close to that town. It’s a beautiful town as is all of Western Washington. I felt connected to WA again while I was writing the first two books. One day we hope to be able to move back to WA; we miss the ocean.

Give at least three interesting details about your heroine.

I want my Leading Ladies to be strong, independent, and likeable even while being flawed. I think each of us is happier when we are honest with ourselves about our flaws. Perfection is a myth. Women need to know it is okay to be flawed. We can still be loveable when we have flaws.
What is one thing about your heroine you hope readers connect with?

I hope they see my Leading Ladies as strong women. Yes, they may have encountered situations that run them through the ringer, but they come out the other side determined to still stand on their own two feet. No damsels-in-distress waiting for a macho-male to come swooping to their rescue in every situation.

What makes your hero a hero?

I wanted to portray males that didn’t act like possessive cavemen. That is how many aliens are portrayed in books, and it would annoy the hell out of me to encounter someone like that. A Hero can have a soft spot without being a wimp, too.

Does the title have a special meaning?
The subtitle does. I wanted it to reflect the fact that the women in the stories choose to leave Earth. The whole kidnap/abduction thing doesn’t appeal to me.

Where did the inspiration for this book come from?

I think it came from me reading several Sci-Fi books and the humans were always kidnapped and treated like property. That irritates me in many ways. I am a firm believer in controlling your own destiny. Therefore, I wondered what situations would cause a human to even consider leaving Earth. And since I am owned by cats, I wondered how that decision would be handled by a pet owner.

When danger leads Serra straight into the arms of Jax and Archer, they will do anything to keep her safe, even claiming her despite the fact she is off limits. STORY EXCERPT

Regent Spartan’s eyes narrowed. “Who have you called in?”

“Director Stryker and Ambassador V’Dir.”

With a satisfied nod, Regent Spartan said, “They are the best. If she’s innocent, they’ll clear her. The information we have is that the sale for the new stealth technology is set to be held on New Vega in a few weeks. Serra Lysander is booked on a private shuttle for New Vega before the deadline. That is highly suspicious. Even you have to admit that.”

“And why is she back on Earth now?” Regent Marks asked. “She hardly ever comes back on planet, so why has she decided to come check out the drones we’re testing the stealth tech on? We aren’t set to add it to the fleet for another three months, so why is she here now? She arrived here in the Capital. If she is here to examine her creation, why didn’t she arrive in Light City where the testing site is? We need to know what the hell she is trying to hide!”

Jax stared at the regents, knowing the older men saw the hard edge that gleamed from his own eyes. “Archer,” he snapped.

Knowing what Jax was asking for, Archer stepped forward. “Serra Lysander comes back to Earth every year for a two week period this time a year so she can attend the Freedom Day Gala. She’d never fly into Light City unless she has to, because that is where her fathers are stationed. Since they’re more interested in spending their free time with their mistress instead of seeing their daughter, Serra doesn’t bother with them. Tania Lysander-Dobbs is sure to stay clear of Earth if Serra is going to be anywhere near her fathers.”

“Why would Serra have handed the technology over to the Alliance if she just wanted to sell it?” Jax asked. “If you’ve looked at her accounts, you know she doesn’t care about credits. She hardly spends anything, and has more than she could spend in a lifetime anyways. All her time is focused on work.”

“Still, that doesn’t explain about the timing of the sale,” Regent Marks argued.

Jax turned to glare at the regent. “It’s not her, and you’re wasting time thinking it is.”

Regent Spartan sighed. “Jax, we are doing what we have to in order to protect the Alliance. Hell, to protect Earth. This new stealth program Serra has created far surpasses everything we have to date. Christ, even our systems can’t pick it up on scans. Can you imagine what would happen if one of our enemies had that tech? They could get within range to destroy our shields before we even knew they were there. There is too much at stake for us to simply let her go because you believe her.”

“Our people are working on a system to detect the stealth mode, but they’ve hit a wall and can’t figure out how to do it.” The irritation in Regent Mark’s voice was clear. “We have to figure out who is selling our tech and track the buyer so we can shut it down from that end. We need information, and that woman is the key!”

The grin that crossed Archer’s face was anything but amused. His amber eyes had a dangerous gleam to them that warned everyone in the room that he wasn’t a man to cross. “We’ll figure out who is behind this. Believe me.” He jerked his head toward the door.

 “Jax.”

Jax nodded then pulled the door open, striding out into the hallway. The two regents scurried out of the room after them, their protests falling on deaf ears. Jax simply glared at the soldier standing guard in front of the closed door to the interrogation room and watched with satisfaction as the poor man shifted to the side with a hunch of his shoulders as if trying to escape notice.

“Jax! Stop ignoring me. You can’t go in there,” his father growled.

“Watch me.”

“Damn it, have some sense! You have no authority in this!”

“Oh, but I will. Anything that has to do with Serra is our business, and therefore gives us the authority to act on her behalf.” Jax’s smile was feral. “She belongs to us. Consider her claimed.”

ADULT EXCERPT

Serra sucked in a harsh breath as she admired his strong, beautiful body. He was like sculpted marble, all hard muscle and sinew covered with golden flesh. She loved the hard contours of his body, and the large cock that jutted out proudly from between his thighs.
She was fascinated by the differences between their bodies, and wanted to look at him, up close and personal. He reminded her of a large jungle cat, and she was mesmerized by the way his muscles moved as he stalked forward. Lust mixed with curiosity when he sat down right in front of her. She drank him in, studying the rigid shaft that had filled and risen so it slapped against his hard abs.

Positioning herself between his legs, she hesitated before she set her hands down on his hard thighs. The solid muscle beneath her fingers flexed as she slid her hands up slowly. Tearing her gaze away from his straining flesh, she looked up into his eyes, needing to ask him for what she wanted. As if he knew she was holding back, he frowned at her.

“What do you want, Serra? Ask me and it’s yours.”

“I…I want to study you. Is that bad?”

“Go ahead, baby. But I have to warn you, I’m already riding the edge. It won’t take much to push me over. I want you too much, and having you stare at my dick isn’t helping.”

She looked back down at his hard flesh and saw his shaft jerk under her gaze. “It seems to like the attention,” she murmured.

He choked back a laugh. “You are going to be the death of me, woman.”

She glanced back up at him and smiled, knowing he could see the emotions swirling in her eyes. “No, Jax. I’m going to be your life, as you will be mine.”

“Serra,” Jax growled low in his throat. “Finish your inspection before I take you right here on the damn floor.”

Hearing the strain in his voice, she decided to stop stalling and get on with her experiment. She knew he was holding onto his control by a thin thread from the tension all but radiating from him. Looking at him like this was an experience unlike any other she’d ever had. She wasn’t just a scientist studying a subject. She was a woman learning her lover’s body.

Serra had often heard other women talking about their sex partners. She’d heard men’s penises often described as being odd looking, or even strange and ugly. Now, seeing Jax with her own eyes, Serra knew they were wrong.

Jax was beautiful…every single inch of him.

His hard cock was large and thick, with heavy veins pulsing under the skin of the shaft. The mushroomed head looked soft, almost supple, and she was utterly enthralled as a drop of liquid appeared at the tip from the tiny hole at the end. Pre-cum. She knew what it was, but had never seen it before.

And she wanted to taste it…taste him.

Jax leaned back on his hands, letting his head fall back as he let her do her thing. It was a kind of torture. To sit there patiently and let her study him, when all he wanted to do was throw her on the ground and pound himself into her until he got rid of the damn hard-on he’d been packing for days. He knew about her need to understand everything around her, and he struggled to give her that. Jax not only wanted her to be comfortable with his body, he also wanted her to be able to ask him for anything she needed.

It had been difficult for him to leave her earlier, allowing her time with Archer so she wouldn’t feel overwhelmed or unsure about their commitment to caring for her. He’d seen too many other bonding units run into issues if both men claimed a woman together the first time they introduced her to the pleasures they could give her, and he didn’t want that for Serra. Stepping back had been hard as hell, but he hadn’t been lying when he said he would do anything for her.

Shit, he’d kill for her…waiting a few hours to fuck the hell out of her wasn’t even in his top ten list of difficult tasks he’d do for her. He let his mind drift as he closed his eyes, trying to relax, but they popped back open as he let out a hoarse shout when he felt her tongue lap at the pre-cum dripping from the head of his cock.

Holy galactic sonic boom, she really was trying to fucking kill him!

Serra hummed in her throat as the taste of him exploded on her tongue. His flavor was rich, almost earthy, salty with a hint of sweetness she hadn’t expected. She was encouraged by his throaty growl, and engulfed the head of his cock into her mouth, sucking lightly on the spongy head as she swirled her tongue around it to collect another pulse of pre-cum.

“Sweet God, baby! Fuck, that’s good. Suck it. Suck my cock for me.”

Behind the Scenes

Do you work best on a deadline, or do you need freedom from time constraints?

I need freedom from time constraints to write my stories. I don't like rushing to hit a certain word count. If I did, I think my writing would suffer. My storylines tend to be complex, and so are my characters, all of which take a great deal of time and patience to create. With that said, I do set my own tentative deadlines to make sure I'm not slacking or procrastinating.

Is there a word or phrase you catch yourself overusing?

Cock. Yep, there are only so many ways you can say it. And when you write long, detailed sex scenes, the word tends to gets thrown around a lot. But it’s effective when you whip it out and use it. *wink wink*

How do you know you’ve written a good book?

When I type the words THE END. Seriously, I won't end a book if I'm not fully satisfied with it. Sure, I need to go back and make edits, but I also do that along the way. If I'm not ready to type those two little words, then it isn't good enough to deserve being finished.

How do you keep your characters and stories organized?

Okay, I'm going to admit this. I have a spreadsheet. Yes, a spreadsheet. Since the worlds that I create have numerous secondary characters, I have to keep track of them somehow. I also need to make sure everyone has their own distinct personality traits and physical appearance. I also have a wall with whiteboard contact paper on it so I can write all over it. Feel free to laugh now.

Are you a Swooper (write first, edit later,) a Basher (edit each sentence as you go,) or both?

I'm a combination Swooper and Basher. What does that mean? I’ll write out a scene, then go back and edit the hell out of it before moving on.

What types of scenes are your favorite to write?

My favorite scenes to write are the ensemble scenes, when multiple characters are interacting with each other. Then again, they're also the scenes that are the biggest pain in the ass to write. What does that say about me? lol

Do you prefer to write 1st or 3rd Person POV? Why?

I tend to write in third person omniscient, so I'm not limited to a single character's perspective. It gives me the freedom to tell the story more completely, and allows my readers a better understanding of all my characters through their thoughts and feelings. This is different than 3rd person limited, which is the current trend for most erotic romance authors, but my opinion is 3rd person omni is the way to go. Of course, this usually gets me a few reviews from readers saying I confused them…but what can you do.

Inside the Book

Describe your setting and why you chose to write about this place.

All of the books in this series are set in the future during the year 3013. While science fiction settings can be daunting to create, I love the freedom that comes with world building from scratch. The future is whatever we want it to be. For the authors of the 3013 series, we are able to invent new technology, create new species, and travel the universe—all while focusing on the indomitable force of true love.

What is one thing about your heroine you hope readers connect with?

Serra Lysander may be a genius, but it comes with a cost. When I created her character, I knew I wanted her to stand out, so I gave her a unique form of autism that is very rare in the 3013 world, but is similar to what many people face here in reality. What I hope to show readers is that being different is not a bad thing. We all face challenges, but it’s how you live your life that makes all the difference.

How much and what kind of research did you do for this book?

I do a lot of research when I’m writing my books. I need to know exactly how things work in order to be able to write about it, and I want my facts as authentic as possible. Since Serra has a condition that is loosely based on autism (mainly Aspergers), I did a lot of research on calming techniques. Even though I have a family member and friends who have different forms of autism, I knew I needed to have a better understanding in order to get it right for my storyline. This also led me to the kinbaku/shibari that I used in one of the scenes. It’s a fascinating discipline when used properly, and I urge anyone who is interested in learning more to do their own research before breaking out the ropes.

In the Spotlight with Jess Buffett!

Jess Buffett was born and raised in New South Wales, Australia. She married her high school sweetheart and they live on the Central Coast with their two children. Jess is a hopeless romantic who loves stories about true love with a happy ending—which is probably a good thing given what she writes. She is a huge fan of M/M and M/F romance—anything with hunky men in all their glory, whether they be shifters, vampires, cowboys, or the boy next door. Jess is a firm believer in soul mates, happily-ever-afters, and love at first sight, but that sometimes people need a second or a third meeting for the brain to catch up.

Harry’s Nature
The Keepers 2

Known to most as Mother Nature, Nate is used to people not understanding him. However, nothing shocks him more than when his mate and fellow Keeper, the Easter Bunny, refuses to claim him. Hurt, Nate is even more stunned when Harry changes his mind hundreds of years later, demanding to be given another chance.

Two hundred years ago Harry, the Easter Bunny, made a deal to protect his mate. Believing he would never be able to claim Nate, Harry pushed him away. Witnessing two of his friends struggling from a misunderstanding causes Harry to study the curse that has confined him all these years closer. Realising the very thing that could free him is the one thing he had tried to avoid, Harry must now convince Nate to give him a second chance.

But in keeping him safe, has Harry pushed Nate too far away? Or will Nate see the burden his mate has carried all these years for him, and give Harry a second chance?

Excerpt

Harry stood in the shadows near the entrance to the Pro Custodes, watching Nate pace back and forth, the occasional grimace forming.

He could practically hear Nate’s thoughts. Could they be any louder?
A grumble under his breath and Nate returned to pacing.

Harry couldn’t help the way he raked his eyes over the other man’s form. So tall and lean, smooth skin reminding him of the finest chocolate. What he wouldn’t give to take a bite out of him. But he couldn’t. Not yet.

He sighed, low and almost desperate. So many years wasted, and all thanks to his stupidity...and the Dark Lords. Harry should have known better.

They were tricksters afterall. Not so much interested in carnage, but that was usually the result of their games. They weren’t evil, they were just considered to have ambiguous morals. Fewer in numbers than the Keepers, the Dark Lords were still capable of doing damage, and they had. Harry didn’t doubt for a second that Thyme’s fears over his relationship had been amplified by Fear himself. Not many things could scare Thyme, but his love for Cupid met no emotional match for the much older Keeper.

Harry could sympathize.

Approaching slowly, he hid his grin as another groan filtered through the air and Nate rolled his eyes once more, letting out an irritated huff.

“Problem?” he asked.

He could hear Nate’s heart as it skipped a beat at the sound of Harry’s voice.  Harry could see the struggle Nate had to keep his features neutral, before giving up and pasting on the fakest smile he had ever seen.  “Harry.  I thought you would have left by now.”

Harry frowned. Granted, Harry kept to himself lot lately over the years, his need to keep Nate at a distance had leaked over to the other Keeper’s as well, but that didn’t mean he didn’t care. Is that what Nate truly thought? If so, Harry had more of a battle than he had even thought. “Thyme is my friend too, Nate.  I wouldn’t leave without first knowing he was okay.”

Nate snort was somehow graceful.  “We knew he was going to be fine the moment Cupid said I love you and he began healing.”  The other Keeper’s eyes narrowed in suspicion.  “What are you really doing here?”

At first Harry said nothing, trying to find the right words. He had never been good with them. Perhaps that was why the Dark Lords had managed to pull one over him so successfully. Wording. Amazing how things said a particular way could still mean something different depending on the context.

Harry had been so sure when he had made his deal with the Dark Lord to keep Nate safe, that it had meant he could never have the man. To keep him safe, he had to keep his distance.

God, he was a moron.

One that may not be good with words, but could write a declaration in a matter of moments with his actions. Which is exactly what he did.

Taking the few steps that separated them, Harry didn’t waste time reaching to hook his hand behind Nate’s head, fingers twisting in Nate’s flowing black hair to lock him in place.  The kiss seared him to his soul, tongues dueling, and teeth clashing.  So passionate, so consuming, Harry could feel Nate’s acceptance as he stood there taking the assault on his mouth.  Could tell how much the other man enjoyed it.

Pulling away suddenly, Harry began backing away, his entire body shaking as he restrained himself from jumping Nate right then and there. Nate’s eyes widened, his lips slightly parted. Harry imagined what he must look like right at that moment. On edge, body tense, eyes blazing and determined. When Nate shivered, Harry chuckled.

“One thing about watching Thyme and Cupid?  It made me realized just how detrimental little mistakes can be.  How easily one small thing could be misunderstood, and how it could snowball into something so devastating that you are left wondering how you got there and how to find your way back out.”

“I-I don’t—”

“Don’t tell me you don’t know what I mean.”  There was no way Nate missed the warning in his tone. He was close. Too close to losing it. “You can run all you want, Nate.  But remember, I’m the Easter Bunny, and there is nothing I love more than a good hunt.”

Shimmering out of there before he did anything else, the last thing Harry heard was Nate’s gasp. “Oh shit.”

Blog Post

To celebrate a milestone for me – 1 year as a published author and my birthday – which are both today, I am having an event on my blog at http://jessbuffett.wordpress.com/jess-buffetts-birthdayanniversary-event

Behind the Scenes

Thinking back on your first book, is there anything you would have done differently?
I can definitely see areas that I would have tweak or extended. I will be getting the rights back to 2 of my original releases soon and I have big plans for them now that I have learned a lot.

Do you work best on a deadline, or do you need freedom from time constraints?

Deadline, definitely. I am a master procrastinator otherwise. Lol Left to my own devices I would probably have 5 times the amount of WIP and less than half of the releases I do. J

Is there a word or phrase you catch yourself overusing?

The word seriously. Lol. Apparently when I write I turn into a teenage girl again.

What are you currently working on? How is it different from other books you’ve written?

I’ve started writing Ménage romance on top of MM and MF. So far I’ve just completed an MFM with my friend Hazel Gower, and now I am branching out on my own with a MMF releasing at the end of this month and an MMM currently one of my WIP.

Is there anything you haven’t written that you would like to try some day? Why have you avoided it in the past?

Sci-fi. I’d love to try Sci-fi romance. I enjoy reading it, but I have always been a fan of paranormal over anything. Perhaps if I entwine the two, hmmm…

What types of scenes are your favorite to write?

I enjoy writing fight scenes. Both verbal and physical. I love snark and humour, and if my characters also know how to throw a mean right hook to someone trying to harm them…even better. lol

What is your least favorite part of the writing process?

The synopsis. I HATE writing them. Lol. One of my publishers doesn’t ask for them, and I am eternally grateful to JK Publishing for that.

Inside the Book

Describe your setting and why you chose to write about this place.

The setting is a little different in The Keepers. Their main base of operations doesn’t really exist in one place, and the only way to find it is if you are a Keeper. As for their homes, well, they are spread right through out. In Harry’s Nature, you find that Harry (Easter Bunny) lives in central Australia, and Nate (Mother Nature) lives in the middle of the Amazon.

Where did the inspiration for this book come from?

While watching the kids movie The Guardians. Yes, I know…bad mum. lol

If you could choose one actress and one actor to play your lead characters in a movie, who would they be and why?

I’d have Hugh Jackman for Harry, and Charles Michael Davis for Nate. I can’t really explain it, but they are just perfect in my mind. J
